LBF was established in 1996 by the Lura Bradfield Estate to create lasting opportunities for women. LBF carries out its mission in two primary ways: by providing need-based scholarships to promising women attending The George Washington University or American University; and by awarding grants to organizations in the Washington, DC area that benefit battered women.

LBF's preference is to create a lasting relationship with the recipients, so they can count on this important source of funding throughout their education, both in undergraduate and graduate school.
